I am not impressed
I ordered this due to its convenience however I was rather dissapointed when I saw inside the package. It was mostly in powder form, the rock salts were very few. It works fairly ok for the first time but since most of the salt is in powder form, it is consumed very easily so you need to apply... -
Overpriced and my bag contained significant powder.
While effective at melting snow and preventing icy patches from forming, the bag I received contained a significant amount of powder which made using my salt spreader challenging. The spreader is designed to spray chunks of salt, not powder. This bag, at thirty dollars, is fairly pricey and I...

We have around 4 inches of snow/ice mix (it rotated between snow, hail and freezing rain) which is now frozen solid. We cleared off our driveway yesterday but I need to clear a 100 foot pathway to my back yard, for my dog.
Salt can also ruin concrete and it burns grass and plants into not growing back... my father, who lives in NJ, has since replaced his brick stairs (sidewalk salt made the mortar crumble!

Recently moved up north and dont know s**t about the whole melting snow/ice with salt...
Do i just sprinkle the salt all over my drive way? How much do I need to put on the driveway so it can get the job done?
Michigan girl here...You need to sprinkle the rock salt either where there is ice, or where you know there will be ice. We use rock salt at our doorway, the porch, the steps and the sidewalks if needed. Just sprinkle it.

I've checked Home Depot for some sort of distributor thing, but can't find anything. Is there something that can be used and that distributes ice melt or salt on frozen snow evenly and doesn't just dump it all out? Anyone have any tips?
The best way I've found is by hand.

This book provides an updated discussion of some aspects of snow and glacier hydrology, drawing on the results of investigations in recent years in Arctic, Antarctic, Himalayas, Alps, Rocky Mountains, and other mountains of the world. This book is not meant to be an encyclopaedia in its treatment of snow and glaciers. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the book can serve as a source of reference at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level and that it will stimulate further interest and research in this important part of the hydrologic cycle. Audience: The book should be useful to those who are engaged in the practice of agricultural and civil engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, ecosystem management, forest and watershed sciences, and others.

Study: Antarctic ice melting from warm water below
The western chunk of Antarctica is losing 23 feet of its floating ice sheet each year. Until now, scientists weren't exactly sure how it was happening and whether or how man-made global warming might be a factor. The answer, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, is that climate change plays an indirect role — but one that has larger repercussions than if Antarctic ice were merely melting from warmer air.
Hamish Pritchard, a glaciologist at the British Antarctic Survey, said research using an ice-gazing NASA satellite showed that warmer air alone couldn't explain what was happening to Antarctica. A more detailed examination found a chain of events that explained the shrinking ice shelves.
Twenty ice shelves showed signs that they were melting from warm water below. Changes in wind currents pushed that relatively warmer water closer to and beneath the floating ice shelves. The wind change is likely caused by a combination of factors, including natural weather variation, the ozone hole and man-made greenhouse gases, Pritchard said in a phone interview.
What Is the Best Deicer?
The best deicer is the non-chemical backbreaking solution... the snow shovel. However, proper use of a chemical deicer can ease your battle with snow and ice. Note that I said proper use, since a big issue with deicers is that they are used incorrectly. You want to use the minimum amount of product needed to loosen the snow or ice and then remove it with a shovel or plow, not cover the surface with deicer and wait for the salt to completely melt the snow or ice. Which product you use depends on your specific needs.
Back in ye olden days regular salt or sodium chloride was the usual choice for deicing roads and sidewalks. Now there are several deicer options , so you can choose the best deicer for your situation. The Transportation Research Board offers a tool to help you compare 42 deicer options based on price, environmental impact, temperature limit for melting snow or ice, and the infrastructure needed to use the product. For personal home or business use, you'll probably see only a few different products on the market, so here's a summary of some of the pros and cons of the common deicers:
sodium chloride (rock salt or halite)
Sodium chloride is inexpensive and helps keep moisture from accumulating on roads and walkways, but it is not an effective deicer at low temperatures [only good down to -9°C (15°F)], damages concrete, poisons the soil, and can kill plants and harm pets.
calcium chloride
Calcium chloride works at very low temperatures and isn't as damaging to the soil and vegetation as sodium chloride, though it costs a bit more and may damage concrete. Calcium chloride attracts moisture, so it won't keep surfaces as dry as many other products. On the other hand, attracting moisture can be a good quality since calcium chloride releases heat when it reacts with water, so it can melt snow and ice on contact. All deicers must be in solution (liquid) in order to start working; calcium chloride can attract its own solvent....

). They melt ice over the broadest temperature range and are the only materials effective below 20F. Sodium chloride will work down to 15F, and calcium chloride to 5F. Both are very corrosive and can damage lawns, trees and shrubs.
Ice melting materials that are less corrosive are: urea (fertilizer), potassium chloride (KCL), and calcium magnesium acetate (CMA). These materials are only effective down to 20F and are more expensive. The least effective of the three is the urea. This is a fertilizer and is required in large amounts to melt ice and therefore has the potential to pollute surface and ground water. The Maryland Cooperative Extension does not recommend using fertilizers for ice melting.
Often products contain combinations of the above materials along with an aggregate like sand to aid traction. These products are effective over the entire range of temperatures while offering reduced environmental impact. Check the label to be sure of the contents of the package.
APPLICATION AND STORAGEIce melting products are best applied prior to ice formation. They should be spread thinly over the entire surface. If thick ice has formed in very cold weather add some water to the product to initiate melting.
Experts emphasize that proper ice melter storage will depend on the composition of the product. A good rule of thumb: Ice melters should be stored in airtight containers in humidity-controlled environments. In other words, keep them away from moisture and air.
According to experts, chlorides will draw moisture and will degrade and harden the ice melt product. But, if you have product left over at the end of the season as long as the bag hasn’t been opened, you can leave it as is. Again, any open containers must be completely sealed as exposed ice melters attract moisture and can lead to a product that’s akin to concrete.
Cleaning departments are also encouraged to keep bagged ice melt in air tight containers and covered with a dark wrap to keep the bags from becoming brittle from ultra violet exposure.
