Effective use of driving simulators requires considerable technical and methodological skill along with considerable background knowledge. Acquiring the requisite knowledge and skills can be extraordinarily time consuming, yet there has been no single convenient and comprehensive source of information on the driving simulation research being conducted around the world. A how-to-do-it resource for researchers and professionals, Handbook of Driving Simulation for Engineering, Medicine, and Psychologybrings together discussions of technical issues in driving simulation with broad areas in which driving simulation is now playing a role. The chapters explore technical considerations, methodological issues, special and impaired populations, evaluation of in-vehicle and nomadic devices, and infrastructure evaluations. It examines hardware and software selection, visual database and scenario development, independent subject variables and dependent vehicle, environmental, and psychological variables,...

Public Works Braces For Up to 7” of Snow
The salt spreaders were attached, the calcium chloride was loaded and the plows were ready to roll bright and early Friday morning in Northbrook.
As of late Thursday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) was predicting 3 to 7 inches of snow would fall on the north suburbs Friday. The service issued a winter storm warning for heavy snow in effect from 9 a.m. Friday through midnight Friday night, with the heaviest amounts expected to fall Friday afternoon.
“Tomorrow will be a very long day,” said Paul Risinger, general operations superintendent for the public works department.

Public works crews will be ready to go as of 7 a.m. and typically work 16-hour shifts. While Risinger doesn’t plan to have extra crews on hand during the day, he does have a secondary crew on call once the first shift is over in case the snow continues.
Because temperatures dropped into the single digits overnight and were expected to be in the teens during the day, Risinger was prepared to use calcium chloride along with the salt, which doesn’t work perfectly in very low temperatures. He said crews would focus on getting a layer of salt down on the roads before snow bonded to the pavement and became tough to remove.
