Strong winds, blowing snow provide reminder of winter

A dusting of snow overnight, combined with fierce winds, provided a valuable reminder: It still is winter.
Slick conditions and limited visibility were common this morning across the area. Quincy police advised motorists to avoid South 36th Street between State and Harrison streets because of slick and hazardous conditions. Traffic was backed up and officers were on the scene.
In Missouri, traffic was slowed in the southbound lanes of U.S. 61 north of Palmyra because of a six-vehicle accident. There was another two-vehicle crash reported on U.S. 61, also just north of Palmyra.
From midnight to 10:30 a.m. Thursday Quincy Police Department were dispatched six times with one motorist assist call, according to Adams County 911 Director Steve Rowlands.
Adams County Sheriff's deputies reported to 14 weather-related traffic incidents today, but only one involved injuries. Deputies said Judith Chaplin of Plainville, 46, lost control of her vehicle on North 400th Avenue before it struck a bridge guardrail. Chaplin's injuries were not life-threatening but she is being treated at Blessing Hospital, deputies said.
