Des Moines is Prepared for Snow

Des Moines airport and public works department say they are prepared for any snow a weekend storm may bring.

At the Des Moines Public Works supply station on Friday, snow plows were already leaving for their designated areas around the city. They are preparing for what ABC5's weather team says could be the largest winter storm of the season in some parts of central Iowa.

We talked with the Director of Public Works, Bill Stowe, about what the city is doing to prepare. He says using rock salt is key in situations like these.

"Rock Salt is usually what we use in a storm like this. It's relatively warm but we're going to see rain before the snow comes to us," says Bill Stowe.

The city workers won't put down normal salt to begin with because the rain would just wash it away before the storm transitions to snow. This creates a much safer environment because it doesn't allow ice to freeze to road surfaces.
