The arrival of the railroad in South Dakota is directly responsible for the population boom and town development the state experienced in the early 1900s. Enticed by the promise of opportunity, many immigrants and East Coast residents hopped on the train and headed west, many settling in South Dakota. Railroads opened the doorway and made the West what it has become. Using over 200 images, authors Mike Wiese and Tom Hayes take the reader on a historic tour of the depots, trains, and wrecks that defined South Dakota railroading in the early part of the 20th century. Drawing on their immense collections of images and postcards, they tell a story of railroad development and local history in South Dakota.

What's playing in theaters this weekend?
“The Five-Year Engagement” plays like a five-episode, R-rated story arc from “How I Met Your Mother.” With more profanity and more explicit sex. And considerably less drinking. And no Neil Patrick Harris. Jason Segel, co-star of both the TV show and the movie, and his “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” team, feed us two hours-plus of recycled gags from the show and bits that might have been in the sitcom but were too expensive for it. Emily Blunt and Segel are Violet and Tom, young lovers in San Francisco planning a wedding. Until she gets a fellowship to study and work at the University of Michigan. He gives up his job as sous chef at a trendy restaurant, and the wedding, a big wedding, is postponed. He’s resigned to it and supportive. She’s distracted, even after the pep talk with her ditzy sister (Alison Brie, a stitch). Violet is spending too much time at the office, running psychological experiments with her “bad decisions” specialist mentor (Rhys Ifans, funny enough) and judging Tom by what she’s learning. And the wedding plans keep tumbling backward.
Mustangs plow over Clintwood's title hopes | TriCities.com
Christian threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning scoring toss to Michael Shelor with 4:01 remaining, as Eastern Montgomery eked out a 26-21 victory over Clintwood on Saturday afternoon in the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 1 semifinals.
Eastern Montgomery (13-0) plays Riverheads (12-1) next Saturday for the state championship. Lonesome Pine District and Region D runner-up Clintwood ends its season with a 12-1 record.
An emotionally-drained Christian lingered on snow-covered Ralph Cummins Stadium long after Saturday’s victory. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound senior managed an impressive offensive output against a Clintwood defense that had posted four shutouts and yielded just 7.2 points per game through the first 12 contests.
“I knew it was going to be tough,” Christian said. “I knew it was going to be just like it was, coming down to the wire. I’m just glad that we pulled it out.”
It appeared no late-game heroics would be needed as EM bolted out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. However, Clintwood steadily chopped away at the deficit and the Greenwave took its first lead of the day at 21-20 with 5:30 remaining in the game on Gavan Meade’s touchdown run and the ensuing extra point by Nick Lewis.
“No quit in this bunch,” said Clintwood coach Rick Mullins. “I can guarantee you that. You may have heard what I told them in the huddle there [after the game]. I told them this is a good football team we played against. We showed some character today. We just came up a little bit short.”
Clintwood’s lead was short-lived as Christian needed just four plays to help the Mustangs retake the lead. His game-winning toss came on a heads-up play, when he started to run the ball, before flicking the ball to Shelor, who then outraced the Clintwood defense into the end zone.
“That was just crazy,” Christian said. “It was a play for me to run it, but we also have Mike scatting out. I saw the defender come up on me and I seen Mike wide open. I just threw it to him.”
