Later, in midlife — after she had attended college, worked a bit in banking, married, and was fulfilling a career working as the assistant to the vice president of doctoral programs at Eastern Seminary near Philadelphia — Mathewson found herself regularly stopping by one particular dairy farm to look at the cows, often at milking time.

Once, Mathewson remembers fondly, she and her sister had the experience of seeing a calf being born in a pasture when they pulled over to the side of the road on a drive to her sister’s cottage in Potter County.

Upon moving to Garden Spot Village retirement community in New Holland, Pa., where a group from her church had also moved, Mathewson was invited on numerous occasions to get an ice cream cone at the Lapp Family Farm in New Holland. This is a friendly farm, where the Lapp family, including Benuel and Lena Lapp and their sons John and David, have an on-farm store where they sell ice-cream, milk and other products. Visitors are encouraged by the neat and tidy farm to stay a little while and enjoy the farm’s scenery, watch the Jersey herd being milked while guests lick ice cream cones, or observe a peacock pair strutting across the grass.

November 2010 Retail Business Weather Round-Up « Trend Setter

U.S. NOVEMBER 2010 SUMMARY: November 2010 was the first month since May 2010 to trend colder than last year for the nation as a whole. All 4 weeks of the retail November trended colder than last year with some of the greatest y-o-y changes occurring during the Black Friday weekend which was the coldest in over 20 years. While precipitation trended greater than last year, this was the 6 The most important retail period of the month was, of course, the Black Friday weekend. Cold weather was a positive during this period as holiday shoppers loaded up on both gifts and must-have cold weather categories. Another positive for gifts and store traffic was very dry weather across the nation with 95% of the country staying dry. Snow coverage was much greater this year with 36% of the nation covered in snow (most in 10 years) versus 8% last year. While snow can cause disruptions to store traffic, much of this snow had already fallen by Black Friday so disruptions were minimal and the snow covered landscape helped to get consumers in the Winter mindset. Pent-up demand for cold weather categories following an exceptionally warm October likely led to double and triple digit sales gains for seasonal products like electric blankets, pantry loading foods, heavy outerwear, car batteries, etc. Much more snow this year will have led to very strong increases for snow and ice removal products as well. Reports of flu are down considerably from last year (thanks to the warmer start to Fall) which is another boost for store traffic and gift sales, but an obvious negative for Drug Stores. High end retailers are expected to come out on top this month with Drug Stores expected to underperform. Urea Ice Melt

Urea is a common fertilizer ingredient, and it’s also marketed as a safer, salt-free choice for ice melting. However, urea is minimally effective at melting ice. Furthermore, urea adds nitrate to runoff water, making it environmentally unfriendly.

Physical Ice Removal

Those who have a zero-tolerance policy for chemicals in the garden should consider physical ice removal. Gardeners who miss toiling in the summer may rise to the challenge of physically chipping ice from hard surfaces in the landscape. Gardeners can buy a forged ice scraper or ice chisel for less than 30 dollars. For very small but stubborn ice patches, gardeners can also break out their propane weed torch to melt the ice.
