DPW Crews Combat Slick Roadways, Side Streets

INDIANAPOLIS -- Crews with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works were out in full force on Saturday to clear the wintry mix of snow and ice that blanketed the Circle City’s roadways and side streets.

Before the first snowflake fell, about 90 DPW snow plow drivers worked overnight to keep Hoosiers safe.

"We wanted to focus on the main thoroughfares first because those are the ones that emergency vehicles, police officers and people use to get to their destinations,” DPW spokeswoman Kara Brooks said.

Meanwhile, homeowners dug out from the slush that blocked many driveways, and the ice made efforts a little tougher.

"I knew it was going to be a lot of scooping when I came out here today,” resident Debbie Shook said. "It didn't scoop as nicely as your light fluffy snow. When I started shoveling I realized I needed a better shovel."

Shook said she bought a new shovel and salt to put down in her driveway, RTV6's Myrt Price reported.
