The snow particles entrained in the wake of the snowplow (i.e. snow cloud) and the subsequent snow accumulation on the warning lights appear as the most pronounced visibility problems behind the snowplow truck. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are employed with detailed 2D and 3D models of the snowplow trucks (1) to evaluate the performance of the add-on devices (airfoils) available in the market which improve the rear visibility of truck by the public; (2) to gain more insight over the snow cloud pattern. Considering the low density of snow particles and high drag coefficient, they are assumed to follow air flow and their effect on the flow pattern is neglected. The effect of airfoil on the snow accumulation behind the truck is quantified by pressure and shear stress distribution. Snow plowing gets help from GPS in Old Bridge

OLD BRIDGE — The snow came down. The plows went out.

But with the mid-January snowstorm, the township had a little technological help in clearing off Old Bridge streets. The township launched a new system during the storm, using GPS-enabled phones to track each independent plow truck on the road to help encourage safer and more efficient snow removal, Mayor Owen Henry said.

During past storms, Henry said, the township relied on phone calls to see where trucks were located and which roads have been plowed.

“The question constantly was, ‘Where are you?’ ” he said.

Now, with the GPS system, township officials can monitor the plowing in real time, checking where trucks are located, what streets have been plowed, and if drivers are sticking to their routes. All of this helps to create more accountability and efficiency in plowing, because the public works director can now move trucks wherever they are needed, Henry said.

With more than 100 independent plow trucks employed during some major snow storms, Henry said, more efficient plowing will lead to cost savings for the township.
