Deborah Casadei, public information officer for PennDOT Engineering District 10 -- which includes Armstrong, Clarion, Butler, Indiana and Jefferson counties -- told the Leader Times that includes changing your habits long before you step into your vehicle. You should always have at least a half tank of gas, working wipers and full fluid levels and tire pressure. Every car also should have an emergency kit that includes everything from a small shovel and a working flashlight to blankets and bottled water.

"You always want to be prepared for any kind of weather," Casadei said. "In this area, conditions can change quickly from one county to another and one hour to another. But one of the best things you can do is give yourself extra time to get where you're going. That way you can take it slow when the situation calls for it."
