Riding with a county road plow
Vander Wall is a snowplow driver for the Mason County Road Commission. And while the view from his truck is quite nice some days, other days the view is nothing but snow.
Thats when he likes the rumble strips the most because he can feel the center line of the road even if he cant see it.
Vander Wall said last year was the first time he noticed what a boon the cuts into the pavement are. He and another truck were plowing U.S. 10 east of Scottville on the Saturday when 15-18 inches of snow fell on the area. He couldnt see the road, but he could feel it.
The rumble strips have saved me a lot of times,Vander Wall said. Some days you just dont know where the road is.
Thursday wasnt a day bad enough to need the rumble strips to navigate most of the day but some areas of the highways were almost complete white-outs in the 40 mph winds with lake-effect snow.
New wheels
Vander Wall can do his route U.S. 10 east of Scottville and U.S. 31 north of Scottville
