Must have for snow!
I finally got a Snow Brum after living in the northeast my whole life. I can't believe I've wasted so much time with a regualr snow brush. And this is a required tool if you have an SUV and hate having 50 pounds of snow slide down your wind shield when ever you hit the brakes. You can clean... -
Great Product
I bought my first one a number of years ago at a chain store and was skeptical but then after using it to push off huge amounts of snow with one sweep I was hooked. The telescoping handle is nice and reaches high over the car. Lots of heavy snow can be removed in a few minutes unlike a snow...

Being in snow country I don't know of anyone who rents plows. You can hire them to do the work but plowing snow is very tough on expensive equipment, even for experienced operators. Try to get a removal contract with reputable company. If this...

what is the best small truck for plowing, was thinking a jeep or trailblazer with a myers plow, I only plow one lot and couple of driveways in buffalo new york. does anyone have this setup and are you happy with it?
I suspect that Buffalo gets plenty of snow. I had a Chev Blazer (full size) with a Meyers plow and quite often the Blazer wasn't heavy enough to move a foot and a half or two of feet of wet snow, and was pretty helpless later on in the season...

The snow particles entrained in the wake of the snowplow (i.e. snow cloud) and the subsequent snow accumulation on the warning lights appear as the most pronounced visibility problems behind the snowplow truck. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are employed with detailed 2D and 3D models of the snowplow trucks (1) to evaluate the performance of the add-on devices (airfoils) available in the market which improve the rear visibility of truck by the public; (2) to gain more insight over the snow cloud pattern. Considering the low density of snow particles and high drag coefficient, they are assumed to follow air flow and their effect on the flow pattern is neglected. The effect of airfoil on the snow accumulation behind the truck is quantified by pressure and shear stress distribution. The airfoil selected based on the numerical studies is implemented on the back of the truck and tested in the field. The results confirmed the rear visibility performance increase by the airfoil over...

MnDOT snowplow driver hit by train attends state observance
MANKATO — Snowplow driver Brad Bruegger remembers nothing about that snowy day several months ago. Maybe that’s just as well.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation worker had been plowing snow near Kiester when his truck became stuck on tracks at a railroad crossing.
The 55-year-old Wells resident received critical injuries he continues to recover from as he slowly wends his way toward his goal.
“I want to get back to work,” he said Thursday at MnDOT headquarters in Mankato, where the state agency’s annual Workers Memorial Day observance took place.
Similar events throughout Minnesota are taking place this week to commemorate workers who have died while working on MnDOT construction and maintenance projects.
Bruegger escaped that fate, but since 1960, 33 MnDOT employees and 15 private sector contractors have been killed on the job.
At Thursday’s observance Lee Hiller, president of Mankato Building & Construction Trades Union, recited a litany of casualties, including workers killed or seriously injured during such disparate endeavors as building a Mankato Hy-Vee supermarket, working at Bethany Lutheran College, paving a road in Delavan and, most recently, MnDOT worker Mike Struck’s death last year while performing flood mitigation work between Mankato and St. Peter.
$98000 snowplow simulators let drivers practice: Watch out for ...
The snow is virtual, but the white knuckles on the steering wheels are real.
That's the experience snowplow drivers and would-be snowplow drivers are getting on the Minnesota Department of Transportation's new snowplow simulators.
The $98,000 devices are replicas of snowplow cabs, with steering wheels, brake, accelerator and clutch pedals, gear shifts, ignition keys, turn signals and horns.
Three 42-inch flat plasma television screens play the role of the windshields and side windows. Dashboard controls adjust the virtual mirrors, strobe lights, snowplow blades and salt spreader. There's a knob to adjust a real dashboard ventilation fan. About the only thing missing is a coffee cup holder.
"I've been asked about that," said Bradley Swartz, a MnDOT employee who helps train drivers on the simulator.
With the help of a bank of computers, the simulator allows drivers to practice hundreds of plowing scenarios, from mountain two-laners to interstate highways to built-up urban areas, in bright sunlight as well as nighttime blizzards.
The computers can be dialed up to provide a menu of hazards from glare ice to high winds.
If the driver steers too far to the side of the road, he'll feel the steering wheel vibrate because he's strayed onto a rumble strip. If he seems to get a little complacent, the trainers can tell the computers to simulate a blown tire. If a student fails to notice the warning light showing the brake's air pressure system has blown, eventually the wheels will start to smoke and the engine will overheat.
"We put a little pressure on them," said Andrew Kubista, coordinator of the simulator program. "One thing we always utilize is a deer jumping out of the ditch."
"I can throw the kitchen sink at them. Everything short of a hurricane," Swartz said.
"We can do a hurricane too," Kubista said.
And the simulator programmers haven't forgotten the most dangerous hazard of all: other people. A simulator session is likely to include...
