The people in charge of public works departments in cities and towns throughout the region might all have been doing jigs over the weekend, but it wasn't because of anything Irish.
They were celebrating the coming of spring, combined with the fact that they made it through winter without any significant storms.
This meant almost no overtime for snowplow drivers, fewer truck repairs and piles of sand and salt that should last well into next winter.
"The winter has been absolutely gorgeous," said Maurice McCarthy , public works director for Stratford. "Typically, it costs us about $49,000 to $50,000 per storm, and we'll get about eight storms," McCarthy said. "This winter, we haven't had to go to full mobilization at all."
He said there were only three storms that required plowing.
"And they were a lot easier because the snow melted quickly," McCarthy said.
But don't think the mild winter helped save your local public works department lots of money over the long haul. Last year was a costly one, thanks to Tropical Storm Irene at the end of August and the freak Halloween snowstorm. Both events left public works departments in the region reeling with tree removal work that continues to this day.
