Working for their supper

Right next to modern homes on the edge of Buellton, a scene from the past played out last week as Vern McWilliams harvested hay — not with a tractor or combine but with his team of horses, Thelma and Louise.

“We’re making horse hay,” McWilliams said as he and the perfectly matched Buckskin mares took a break Wednesday. The tall, waving grass with heads of rye grain is particularly good for feeding horses, he added, if it’s cut and baled green so the long stems retain some nutrition.

The owner of the field, Norm Williams, had planted the grain as a cover crop to be plowed under, adding nutrients to the soil, before the field on the south side of Highway 246 was farmed again. However, McWilliams pointed out that if he could cut and bale the hay for his horses, there would be plenty of stubble left to turn under for soil nourishment — and his horses would get perhaps 150 bales of hay to eat.

Thus, a win-win deal was sealed.

Working in no particular hurry, he predicted that it would take him a couple of days to finish mowing the approximately seven acres just west of Buellton.
