It may not be great literature — but at least it's handy. From the mastemind of the hugely successful The Red Green Show comes a book that is going to change your life, or at least make you laugh — a lot — whenever you pick it up. And people are going to be picking it up for many years to come, because — like the long-rerunning TV shows — there's not a topical gag in the book anywhere, so it's going to be funny for the forseeable future. And as its title suggests, this is also a terribly useful book. Among its very many gems of advice, it shows how to cook with acetylene, take revenge on a lawn mower, measure your hat size with a two-by-four, reduce your carbon footprint (it involves moving into a fruit tree located next to a liquor store) and make your own alternative fuel (which involves an empty propane tank and a full septic one).
Magic and Destruction--On a World Scale Imagine the drama and terror of the Second World War--only the bullets are beams of magical fire, the tanks are great lumbering beasts, and fighters and bombers are dragons raining fire upon their targets. Welcome to the world of the Derlavaian War, a world which is slowly but surely being conquered, mile by bloody mile, by the forces of the Algarvian empire...forces whose most terrible battle magics are powered by the slaughter of an innocent people. In this, the fourth volume of the series which began with Into the Darkness, the war for the continent of Derlavai builds toward its crescendo as the mages of Kuusamo, aided by their former rivals from Lagoas, work desperately to create a newer form of magic that will change the course of the war. But this is really a story of ordinary people--on all sides of the conflict--forced by fate to rise to their heroic limits...or sink to the level of their darker natures.
A young Kaunian girl is forced to remain hidden while her Forthwegian savior braves the rough, Algarvian-controlled streets to earn their keep. The scholars of Kuusamo are no closer to understanding the bloodless magic that may win the war-and time is short. Kuusamo has joined into an unsteady alliance with Lagoas and Unkerlant. No one kingdom trusts another, but they must unite, for it is only together that they can defeat the Algarvian threat. The war is no longer confined to soldiers and sorcerers. Common folk are joining together to fight from underneath their oppressors, whether they be Algarve or Unkerlant. What those farmer soldiers lack in skill, they make up for in dedication. A dedication that will carry them . . . through the darkness.

Program provides kids to shovel snow for York County seniors
Since Lola Kreft, 85, of Shrewsbury got knee replacement surgery about 10 years ago, bending down to weed her garden has been a problem for her.
Then in the spring, she saw a mention of the Rent-A-Kid program in the newspaper. She called the number, and the York County Area Agency on Aging put her in contact with a local 15-year-old boy to do the work for her.
“I think it’s great,” Kreft said of the program. “I’m really impressed.”
Now that winter’s here — for all practical purposes, if not yet officially — the Agency on Aging is trying to make county seniors aware that hundreds of kids are ready to help them shovel snow, according to director Dianna Benaknin. She said it’s an annual effort on the agency’s part, because they want the seniors to get signed up before the first snowfall hits.
“We try to get people to do things ahead of time so we’re not left with a crisis,” Benaknin said.
And according to AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi, it probably won’t be long before shoveling is necessary.

I have been out shovelling snow this morning – two feet of it in fact. The snow started to fall quite heavily after the kids went off to school and it piled up very quickly. We have a steady stream of people walking up our street so I thought it would be a good idea to clear the snow from the footpath out the front as many of those people are mums with prams and elderly folk – one thing is certain…you don’t need weight loss pills if you have snow to shift as I feel I have burned up several hundred calories just from my work this morning!
I am still getting used to this very cold weather, not sure if I ever will, but I have to admit that the snowy scenes are very pretty to look at. The back garden looks like santa has sprinkled sugar everywhere – very pretty indeed. Next thing is for me to get some shoes with tread on them as I still cannot walk on the frosty ground, I have to hold onto Arnold when we walk the kids to school as I cannot get to grips with the slippery ground. For someone who grew up walking on the sands of Manly beach this is a whole new experience for me.
