That price range is a bit tricky but you can come close to it with an Ariens Sno-Tek. Not a lot of bells and whistles but solidly made in USA. Make sure whatever you get has a good sized impeller and that the housing seems sturdy.

  • Plan your Memorial Day getaways

    While spring storms helped build the snowpack, the recent spate of warm days means there should be plenty of snow-free campsites, trails and roads for Memorial Day weekend.

    Last year, in late June, there were still 158 inches of snow on the ground at Paradise, 263 percent of normal. On Tuesday, the total was 169 inches, 119 percent of normal.

    That lingering snow meant delays in opening campgrounds and roads in national parks and national forests across the region. Cougar Rock Campground at Mount Rainier National Park was more than a week late opening.

    This year, however, there will be plenty of snow-free campsites for whiling away the unofficial start of summer.

    Here is a look at what visitors can expect to find:

    MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK

    As the park sheds its deep mantle of snow, a number of facilities will be open in time for the holiday weekend.

    For drivers, Stevens Canyon Road is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Friday. State Route 410 over Chinook Pass and the White River Road to the campground also are expected to open Friday.

    Winterizing Your Car | Pinoy Pen Articles

    Now that Fall is here, it will not be long before the temperatures get cold and the snow starts. That makes this a good time to get your car ready for winter. Here are some tips for winterizing your car;

    1.   Check the tires and the spare. If your tires are worn, you should replace them. Worn tires do not provide much traction and do not handle well on wet or icy roads. The same is true for high performance tires. If you have those tires, you should consider putting snow tires on your car. You should also check the air pressure in your tires. Cold air makes the air in tires contract and that contraction may make the tires too low.

    2.  Check the battery. Very cold temperatures can drastically reduce the power of your battery. You should have the battery tested at a certified repair shop. Also, check the posts and connections on your battery to make sure they are free of debris.

    3.  Change the oil in the car. Many car makers recommend using less thick oil during the winter, so check your car’s manual.

    4.  Check the belts and hoses. Replace any that show wear. You do not want to get stranded in the cold weather because of a broken belt or hose.

    5.  Check the mixture of antifreeze. Ideally, there should be equal parts of antifreeze and water. You can purchase a tester for the antifreeze at most auto parts stores.

    6.  Check the brakes, lights, heater and defroster and make any necessary repairs.

    7.  Replace the wiper blades and fill the washer fluid reservoir.

    8.  Check the 4WD on your car, if applicable. It should engage properly.

    In addition to the above, there are several items you should put in your car in preparation for the cold temperatures and snow.  Here is a list;

    1.  An emergency road kit including a blanket, flashlight, flares, etc.

    2.  A first aid kit.

    3.  A tool kit and jumper cables.

    4.  A snow brush, ice scraper, small snow shovel, etc.

    Go on a skiing holiday.

    But then it kept coming. There was so much of it and no way that we were getting to work, no-one was. The cars were going nowhere, the snow ploughs were out-foxed and we hadn’t got a sledge. Ah, the joys of having a house on the side of a hill in a rural location.

    Day 1 – Let’s watch a Christmas film, hot chocolate anyone?

    Day 6 - Oh, just put your gloves on. Why must everything be such a fuss? FINE, leave them here then, see how long it takes before your fingers go blue and we need to cut them off.

    STOP jumping in that mound, the snow will go into your wellies. Yes, I know your socks are wet, that’s because you jumped in that mound of snow, what did I tell you?

    Yes, we DO have to walk to the shop, the car can’t get out the drive. We need milk or else you can’t have cereal in the morning. What? Yes, I know that car is going but it’s better than Mummy’s.

    The other half of my street is a bit posh and everyone down there drives a 4×4. My friend told me of a conversation she’d had with one of my posh neighbours about how, in the snow, you need a disco. A disco? But how could a small round crisp help you in snow, she pondered. The penny dropped some time later that she’d been referring to a ‘ Discovery ‘, as in Land Rover. All week I’ve been waving to my neighbours drive past in their discos and smiling through gritted teeth.

    The boy’s dodgy back gave in on Day 2 of drive clearing duties, so it was left to me to take charge of the snow shovel. I could feel him hovering by the window though, promoted to Foreman duties, ‘You’ve missed a bit’. I thought it was quite good fun at first. Idiot. One day I cleared it three times only for it to be covered again within the hour, I could’ve cried.

    And knowing that we weren’t going out meant that I sort of let my, already poor, standards slip. I became a bit lethargic. I’m not actually saying I didn’t have a shower or anything, but some days my bra wasn’t put on until well after lunch and I mainly rocked the comfy trousers tucked into knee high socks look. By Day 3 I caught myself on, gave myself a shake, and put some blusher on. I even put on my nice red bird brooch just to try and feel a bit human again.
