Anatomy of greed, the unshredded truth from an Enron insider
Anatomy of greed, the unshredded truth from an Enron insider For example, the snow shovel business might sell a hundred thousand snow shovels to Home Depot each year. If Home Depot were to ever go bankrupt, ...

Brian Cruver was a firsthand witness to the disturbing, surreal, and hilarious moments of Enron's long dance with death. When he first entered Enron's office complex, "the Death Star," he was the epitome of the Enron employee: young, brash, sporting a shiny new MBA, and obscenely overpaid. From his first day, however, when he was told that some colleagues hadn't really wanted to see him hired, he found himself in the middle of a venal greed machine whose story unfolded with all the absurdity and frustration of a tale by Kafka crossed with Tulipomania and Liar's Poker. While Cruver's book examines the accounting tricks, the insider stock trades—and in a special section, how the grossly lucrative fraudulent partnerships were structured and funded—it also describes everyday life as an Enronian—cocky wheeling and dealing, the sex 'n keg party on the trade floor, casual conversations at the shredder, and the insidious group-think that made Enron employees unquestioningly accept propaganda...

Animal Spirits, How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism The first question, dealing with the price of snow shovels after a snowstorm, ... Indeed Home Depot appears to have reacted to such sentiments after ...

The global financial crisis has made it painfully clear that powerful psychological forces are imperiling the wealth of nations today. From blind faith in ever-rising housing prices to plummeting confidence in capital markets, "animal spirits" are driving financial events worldwide. In this book, acclaimed economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller challenge the economic wisdom that got us into this mess, and put forward a bold new vision that will transform economics and restore prosperity. Akerlof and Shiller reassert the necessity of an active government role in economic policymaking by recovering the idea of animal spirits, a term John Maynard Keynes used to describe the gloom and despondence that led to the Great Depression and the changing psychology that accompanied recovery. Like Keynes, Akerlof and Shiller know that managing these animal spirits requires the steady hand of government--simply allowing markets to work won't do it. In rebuilding the case for a more robust, behaviorally...

Great eco-friendly gardening products

Here’s a look at some new garden products that come with an environment-friendly endorsement:

Earth Safe products

Organic liquid fertilizers are the gentlest way to feed your plants. They have low nutrient numbers, which does not mean they are less effective than fertilizer with high-ratio content numbers; they are just designed to deliver a boost to the plant in a more direct way through root drenching or direct foliage spray. Here are ones produced by Greenstar Products of Aldergrove.

Kelp. This is an organic fertilizer that is based on the centuries-old tradition of using seaweed to boost soil nutrition, mainly to add a boost of potassium to promote overall healthiness in a plant. It has a rating of 0-0-4, but Greenstar says this is no indication of the “wonderful” effectiveness of the liquid, which is fast-acting with the nutrients becoming immediately available to the plant.  It can be used as a root drench or foliar spray. The rate of application is three or four pumps of the nozzle to one litre of water.

Emergency Car Kit for Winter…Be Prepared! - 92.9 Jack FM - Playing ...

About ten years ago I got stuck in my car during that one big storm that dumped a foot of snow on us in an hour (like that doesn’t happen every couple years right?) …anyways I was just reminiscing about it and deciding I wanted to write a freeloader’s guide to basic survival in your car during winter time.

By now you’d think we’d know what to put in our car for winter time but every spring we take all of it out, store it somewhere, and forget about it.  Well with the first hints of winter hitting the region let’s stock back up.

Blanket - I have a battery operated LED flashlight and one of those battery-less ones that you shake to build up electricity.  Never know when you need a flashlight, this is just an all around good thing to keep in your car.  The LED kind uses less battery juice, but I have the other one in case the batteries are dead. Pen, Crossword Puzzles, Paper -  I figured I’d group this all together for space sake.  In the age of I-Pad’s, Android phones, and Kindle, it’s always good to remember that a pen and paper could be a valuable resource.  Think about if you leave the car, you might want to write a note to whoever finds your car…. writing that note in blood could cause some concern. Compact Snow Shovel – -  This should be a no-brainer but I was at home depot watching this person pick out an ice-scraper, and I asked “do you have a snow brush?”.  They said “no” at which point they gave me a dirty look and picked out the most expensive bad-ass ice scraper/snow brush I had ever seen. I think it had an electric hand warmer.  Extra Clothes Really I have to tell you this, it should be in your car at all times!! Along with flares, a spare tire, and a pair of sunglasses. Hey the glare from the flares suck.

I’m sure there something I forgot. Guess, I’ll remember the  next time I get stuck in a car on the 190 for 24 hours.  Then I’ll say…oh yeah I should of put this in the car.  At least with these essentials you won’t die too quickly.  Stock up your car and be safe driving this winter. Feel free to add your own must have items in the comment section.

The Best Tools For Easily Bagging Leaves - DIY Home Improvements Depot

It’s fall, which means football, Thanksgiving fun and falling leaves. There are literally hundreds of different ways to rake and collect leaves in your yard from chipper vacs to tractor bags to leaf blowers, but that’s only half the battle when it comes to cleaning up your yard. If you live in a community that requires you to collect your leaves in paper or plastic bags, then you know that bagging leaves is a lot more ardous than just raking them up.

Fortunately, there are lots of different gadgets and methods you can use to help you put your leaves into bags. Most leaf bagging systems help you hold the bag open or help you put the leaves in the bag and some do both at the same time.

Leaf Scoops, Rakes and Vacuums

Double Rake : Who among us hasn’t tried using two leaf rakes to pick up a huge pile of leaves and move it or bag it? It sounds easy to do but the execution rarely works out as planned. Hence, the double rake! It’s a set of two leaf rakes that are attached together at the handle tops with a hinge, making it look like a giant pair of salad tongs. While it may make it easier to pick up leaves this way, being able to actually move the leaves into a bag might still be a little awkward and require some practice.

Leaf Scoops and Hand Rakes : A lot of people just ditch the rake and use their hands or two garbage can lids to pick up leaves and drop them in an open bag. There are lot of different hand held rakes, scoops and claws that are designed to work a little better and more easily than those lids. As long as you don’t mind bending over these can work pretty well, though it’s still a lot of work to get a large pile of leaves into several bags. They’re easy and safe to use, so they could be a good way to entice kids to help out with the yard work.

Shovelling Leaves : I know, I wrote about this a while ago but I still find that I can use a snow shovel to lift my leaves (especially if they are wet) and bag them fairly easily. This works much better if your leaves are shredded or chopped up with a lawn mower or quality chipper vac first. Some snow shovels are obviously better than others and I tend to favor the ones with the ergonomically designed bent handle that make it easier to lift heavy loads without pulling any muscles in your back.
