I would recommend a two stage. They will handle more snow and be able to throw it farther than a single stage. Most two stage snowthrowers also have a self propell system that is driven by the wheels. Most single stage self propell models are driven

I don't see anything wrong with the shear pins. Sometimes the auger will turn - other times it won't. The problem doesn't appear to be related to being jammed with snow. I have tried it before clearing the driveway and after(if I get it to work.)
Is the auger belt driven or shaft driven? Older snow throwers use a belt drive system, if this is the case, your solution could be as simple as tightening or replacing the belt. A shaft drive or direct drive might have a problem with the gearbox.
