You of course will need an extension cord that is heavy and long enough to reach your area to clear. The surface that you can use an electric snow shovel on has to be smooth. Electric snow shovels can get into small areas. They are good to clear steps with. The only thing to watch out for here is where you blow your snow. You can use them on decks too. As long as you have a clear path to blow your snow, electric shovels are very portable. A very good model to consider is a Toro Power Shovel 7.5 amp electric snow thrower.
Electric snow shovels do have a hard time with wet or frozen snow. If the snow is wet and heavy the shovel will not throw it very far. You can take smaller bites, but it will take longer to clear your spot out this way. If your snow has thawed and then refrozen, the snow shovel may not be able to chop up the snow. This could even break any plastic paddles in your snow shovel.
Small to medium snow throwers
If you have a small driveway and/or a lot of sidewalks to clear, you may want to look at a medium snow thrower. These come either powered by electric or gasoline engine. They also are what are called a single stage snow thrower.
Single stage Snow Throwers
Single stage snow blowers have only one impeller or auger to throw the snow with. They are meant for use on smooth surfaces of concrete or blacktop. The impeller travels on the surface to be cleared. This is what pulls the snow blower along also. There are no drive wheels on single stage snow throwers. However, they do have snow chutes to direct the thrown snow.
Electric powered snow blowers
For the electric type snow thrower, they will need up to a 15-amp or better service. You have to use the right sized or gauge extension cord also. For chords up to 100 feet use a 14-gauge wire size, and for up to 150 feet 12-gauge wire size will be needed. Plus you have to watch that you do not run over your power chord.
