Mid-April Snowstorm Hits the Range
CHISOLM – It’s mid-April but it doesn’t look exactly like spring outside.
A predicted four to seven inches turning into almost double that.
"I was kind of surprised to see this much," Chisholm resident Larry Baskavan said.
Heavy wet snow blanketed the northland.
The Iron Range was hit the hardest with eleven inches of snow.
"Kind of funny to go from 70 degrees down to this," Baskavan said.
"I wake up and I can't get into my car," Virginia Resident Spencer Johnson said.
The snowstorm rolled into town as rain and quickly turned into snow.
"I looked out there and there wasn't anything,” Baskavan said. Then I looked again and it was snowing like crazy."
People were forced to bring out their ice scrapers and dust off those snow blowers that were tucked away in the garage.
"Just so wet and heavy you can hardly blow," said Baskava.
Cars drove on bare pavement just a few days ago, now stuck.
Valley Residents Already Prepared for Winter
Many in the Valley are getting a jump on winter. Last year 14 Virginians died as a result of the cold weather and storms. According to Gov. Bob McDonnell, the damage cost tax-payers more than $46 million. As a result, McDonnell has officially declared this week to be Winter Preparedness Week.
McDonnell says the loss of life and property during the winter months can be greatly reduced if Virginians take appropriate measures before, during and after experiencing severe winter weather.
According to Lowe's manager Travis Brooks, it wasn't just residents who were caught off guard last year.
"A lot of people last year would come to get snow shovels, and we'd be out," Brooks recalls.
It was difficult to find a shovel, icemelt or snow blowers in any store. Many were out of stock nearly as soon as the items hit the shelves.
"I think with the years of not having snow, people kind of got complaisant about it, and after last year, all that snow that we had, it just kind of scared everybody," Brooks says.
Brooks says it's not uncommon for customers to stock up on winter supplies, but this year it started earlier than ever.
"Probably the beginning of September, people were buying snow throwers and shovels, believe it or not," Brooks says.
Because of that, many customers didn't need to purchase a shovel after Saturday night's flurries, they did that months ago.
Brooks says many customers rely heavily on predictions from the Farmer's Almanac.
"Its calling for more snow than we got last year. So, I think it has put a little bit of scare in people, and they want to make sure they get everything," Brooks says.
The same goes for the store. Lowe's stocked up early on shovels and deicer, and the only thing customers are buying faster than they can order is snow blowers.
"As soon as they come in, they're out the door pretty much," Brooks says.
Though McDonnell encouraged Virginians to prepare for winter this week, it seems many in the Valley didn't need to be told. They're already prepared for the next big storm.
