The quality of America | dwasifar's daily gripe

Today was the first significant snow of the season where I live.

This year, I bought a snowthrower.  This is the first one I’ve ever owned; I was using my neighbor’s all last winter and I kind of got spoiled by it.  It’s a Troy-Bilt, a big hulking thing that cost several hundred dollars.  It’s been sitting in my garage since early September, waiting for today.  I read the instructions, wheeled it into the driveway, and pushed the button.  It started right up and I started happily clearing away snow.

This went on for about eight minutes, and then it broke down.

What a letdown.  Brand-new American-built machine, and it lasts eight minutes before a breakdown that stops it in its tracks – literally.  The engine was running and the auger was spinning but the wheels didn’t turn.  I looked at the owner’s manual for troubleshooting tips, and found nothing that was relevant except possibly a drive belt.  So I opened it up and found a spring-loaded idler pulley for the drive belt was flopping around loose, the end of the spring actually sitting against the slack belt.  I poked around trying to figure out where the spring end was supposed to attach, then suddenly noticed an extra bolt hole with nothing in it.  At that moment I realized the problem – a dual-function bolt, intended both as a fastener (to hold the engine to its mounting) and as a pressure point for the spring, had simply come out of its hole and fallen away.  I guess it was never tightened.  I realized the only place it could have gone was down further into the housing, so I had to remove the bottom of the machine to retrieve the lost bolt.  I reassembled everything and went back to snow removal.

But the whole time, I was grousing to myself about why I should have had to do this.

America likes to make a lot of noise about quality American built products.  You couldn’t tell it from this.  The machine shipped with a loose bolt.  It’s not rocket science to tighten the damn bolts before you put it on the truck.  It’s just carelessness.  If I were not handy with tools, and willing to take apart a brand new machine to figure out what’s wrong – if I had been most other buyers – the machine would have been returned to the store and become a service problem for the dealer or distributor, to be resold at a loss as a refurbished item.  And as long as we’re talking about service problems, how about this (paraphrased) service advice from the manual: “Do not tilt the unit with gasoline in the tank.  Do not attempt to drain gasoline from the tank.  Instead, run the engine until the tank is empty.”
