Byelection is Hudak's shot at redemption
Conservative leader Tim Hudak has one last chance to save his job.
He seems to know it, too. He rose to the occasion Friday in Waterloo, where a crucial byelection will soon decide the balance of power in Ontario.
Hudak toured Valley Blades Ltd., a Waterloo plant that makes blades for snowblowers, construction and forestry equipment. Inside, the smell of hot metal filled the air, and enormous machines with giant flywheels pounded and cut the blades so hard that the concrete floor shook.
The setting was well chosen: This factory, on which 100 employees depend for their jobs, is absorbing huge increases in surcharges related to electricity bills, such as debt retirement fees and the high cost of developing and selling green energy.
The company is paying $377,000 a year in electricity bills, up from $368,000 five years earlier. That’s not a huge increase, until you consider that it’s all because of the surcharges on the electricity, which have doubled, and not the electric power itself. In fact, hydro costs are less than half of what they were in 2006. Slow demand since the recession has kept the prices low. But it won’t last, and when the economy recovers and demand increases for electricity, the price will rise and those bills will really soar.
