City auction to raise money for general fund
In a dusty storage building tucked away on Woodland Street, a knot of orphaned bicycles lay tangled on the cold cement floor.
Throughout the year, police officers add to the growing mound. By May, close to 100 bikes lay strewn about the floor, their individual forms lost in a pile of metal.
That is, until the purge.
Each year, the city holds a government surplus auction to sell items to the public that it no longer has use for, said Capt. Chris Jones of the Marshalltown Police Department.
This year's auction will be held 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Marshalltown Police Impound, just east of the compost plant, 901 Woodland St.
Items from various departments - housing, parks and recreation and the Marshalltown Fire Department - make their way into the auction menagerie.
This year's items includes a heavily used green 1996 Dodge Intrepid, a 30-inch television, six-horsepower snowblower, a floatable shark pool toy, office furniture and a Harley Davidson seat, still in its box, Jones said.
