How important is backward motion in snow thrower? What would you like to ask?
Jan 13, 2009 by sofa | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I'm planning to buy a snow thrower and I'm looking at my options. So far, I think I want to get a 2stage one, but I can't decide whether forward AND backwards motion is better than forward motion alone. Any experience and advice is welcomed.
Thanks!
That depends on the snowblower and it's gearcase. If the drive is disengaged when you release the handle, and you can easily move it, then you don't need reverse. I use all 6 of my forward gears at different times, depending on the snow, but I hardly ever use the 2 reverse gears. I've never seen one that didn't have reverse though. If you have found one without it, and it's significantly less than one with reverse, go for it. If the difference is minimal, I'd go with the one with reverse. You never know when you are gonna need it....... Hope this helps.

Woodtick is right.Get a reverse, in a heavier snow or if the blower is a bit big a reverse is very handy to have. I don t use mine much either , but when I do, its handy. If you get any amount of snow( sometimes heavy) a 2 stage is the way to go also, GL

How do remove the oil pip cap from my Ariens Snow Thrower?
Nov 17, 2008 by meblake78 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The cap of the pipe that extends the oil drain in my Ariens Snow Thrower is stuck. I cannot remove it at all. Every time I put some force on it the pipe itself unscrews. Please help!
So go ahead and remove the pipe then you can put it in a vise and get the cap off like you want to.
If you are changing the oil just be sure the drain pan is under it so it catches the old oil.
Then reinstal it all

hold the pipe with a small pipe wrench, and turn the cap off with another

Why does my 2-cycle snow thrower die after five minutes?
Feb 14, 2007 by elpetay | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a Yard Machines 3.5 HP single-stage snow thrower with a 2-cycle engine. It has been tempermental this winter (and last) but pretty much follows a very odd trend. After I get it started, which may take some effort, it will run fine for about 5 minutes. Then it bogs down like the choke somehow got flipped on and it will eventually die. I have checked the choke many, many, many times, with no result. If I let it sit and cool off for 5-10 minutes, it will (sometimes) start back up and then will do the same thing after about 5 minutes.
WHAT IS UP WITH THIS ENGINE? I can't figure it out.
A two cycle engine has internal REED valves, Those valves become gummed up with oil and goop and dont operate properly causing the engine to actually "blow back thru the carberator" instead of providing a steady suction.
Get some ordinary Carb cleaner and remove that top plate which houses the filter, then as the engine is running at medium speed, spray a generous amount of that cleaner into the engine intake. Do this several times until those Reed valves clean up good. This is a common problem with 2 cycles and is often misdiagnosed as a "carb" problem when in fact it is not.

It can be a few things.
1) Fuel left in the tank from last year. If there was no stabilizer put in with the fuel and run through for about 10 minutes then the fuel breaks down and messes up the engine.
2) Try changing the spark plug
3) Did you mix oil in with the fuel and is the fuel fresh?
I hope this helped.

Had the same problem once. seems like the fuel tank did not have a vent to let air in. otherwise its an electronic ignition problem (coil).

Do I need a 2 stage snow thrower?
Jan 18, 2007 by wsnealis | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I live in NY just outside the city. We get moderate snowfall(just not this year). I have a long driveway, and NEED it cleared. Do I need a 2 stage or will one stage handle it. And has anyone had experience with a pull start snow thrower, I can get a new 5.5hp 2 stage for $500 w/o electric start, or a 7HP one stage w/ elec start for $350. Any opinions?
I would recommend a two stage. They will handle more snow and be able to throw it farther than a single stage. Most two stage snowthrowers also have a self propell system that is driven by the wheels. Most single stage self propell models are driven by the auger. If the snowthrower is working properly, you should have no problem starting it without an electric starter. Keep this in mind. If the snowthower stalls at the end of a long drive way, you have no electric cord to plug the unit into. Most models do not carry an onboard battery, they must be pluged into an electric outlet to use the electric starter.

I have never had problems starting either my 2 stage or single stage snow throwers. They both have primer bulbs which helps. one or two pulls and they start. The single stage snow thrower I use 90% of the time. It's light and very maneuverable. The only problem with it is at the end of the drive where the city blows go by.
martywdx | Jan 18, 2007
I would always go with 2 stage. It will go threw the snow 10x better. and clog less. which means you get to keep all your fingers. Ebau has them really cheap and they deliver. Here's a direct link

spend the extra on the 2 stage i live in upstate ny itll clear the snow faster than a single stage .the first noreaster that blows in youll be glad u got the dual stage

I want to get my husband a snow thrower / blower for his birthday... how does electric do vs. gas powered?
Nov 15, 2006 by Amy B | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
We live in South West Michigan, have a driveway wide enough for a two car garage but that isn't very long and have to clear the sidewalk in front of our home also. It seems to me that an electric snow thrower would be ok... especially for the price. But what do you think?
There are advantages & disadvantages to an electric blower. The biggest being the cord you have to trail along with you. Ive repaired more than I care to think of when the owner gets the cord tangled in the auger. The other disadvantage is the loss of power. There is a drop in power when you have to use a long extension cord. Gas machines are more practical in that they do not lose power at any time. They will maintain a steady speed & not lag when they are put to a heavy load. They are more manuverable in tight situations because your not having to constantly move the cord around to avoid running over it. Ask anyone who has owned an electric machine how much fun it is to be tangled up in a stiff cold extension cord. If you live in Michigan my recommendation is to seriuosly consider a gas machine. They are more exspensive to purchase but you won't wear it out in one season either. There are lots of small machines available @ Home Depot & Lowes but my choice would be Craftsman from Sears. Mainly because they stock a large number of parts & have a service department whereas Home & Lowes only carry the basics & have to order the rest. Nothing is more aggravating than to have to shovel snow by hand while waiting a week for a $3.00 part. Just a few things for you to consider. Also keep in mind the electric one doesn't go vroom, vroom like the gas one. Guys love that!!!! He'll be so impressed he'll do every driveway in the neighborhood the first couple of snowfalls. Besides Craftsman are the official tools of Nascar.

The electric ones are cheaper but they don't have as much power as the gas ones, And you don't have to mess with the extension cords and risk getting shocked in wet snow.
South Bosque Builders | Nov 15, 2006
Don't know anything about electric, but my husband got a gas powered over 25 years ago and still working fine. We also have a driveway wide enough for a 2 car garage and also when he first got it he cleaned out 2 or 3 of our neighbors and also used it on his mother's. I would gladly recommend gas. (We live in North-Central Indiana, so weather might be similar at times.
Minnie | Nov 15, 2006
Definitely go with the gas - thats half the fun for the men, electrical ones come off as "sissy", little power and not as fun. With a gas one, at least he can pretend its a chainsaw.
