Question : i have a toro 826 and the snowblower refuses to start . I replaced the spark plug and I do get a spark. I also tested for compression which is there. I replaced the fuel filter and rebuilt the carb with a kit . Reason was i left gas over summer (duh) and asking around was told varnish clogging in the carb. I poured a small amount of gas in the spark plug hole and it almost started but wouldn’t completely kick in. Sometimes it backfires but mostly just won’t go over the top to run. Im now told its the float and its not properly seated inside the bowl. When cleaning a carb, simply blowing it out is usually not sufficient. To properly clean a carb, it must be soaked in carb solvent.
Remember, it takes months or years for varnish to accumulate. You can not undo that in minutes.
Adjusting valves is simple. You remove the valve cover, turn the engine until the piston is at the top of the stroke, and use a feeler guage to measure the free play in the valve while you use a wrench to adjust it.
Then you turn the engine 180 degrees and adjust the other valve.
The shear key is a small piece of metal that lines the flywheel to the correct position on the crankshaft.
It is necessary to maintain proper timing of the spark, in relation to the piston position when the spark plug fires. If this key is sheared, the engine is said to be ‘out of time’.
