I recently had the attic finished in our c1872 house. Up in the attic previous to the renovation is our 2nd gas furnace which supplies heat to the second floor. The contractor walled in the unit and added a small door for access to the furnace.
The reason for the vents is to allow air to get to the furnace flames. Remember, it takes oxygen to create combustion. That's the reason a furnace cannot be installed in an airtight space. There shouldn't be any forced air coming from that vent !
