SPOTTED: AUDI R8 V10 MANUAL
If the mix of manual and paddle-shift (R tronic) V8 cars now leaves a decent choice of both in the PH classifieds - and I would thoroughly recommend the manual - the same is not true of the V10 version.
The V8 versus V10 argument is much like the old 205 GTi 1.6 versus 1.9 situation: common consensus asserted that smaller was sweeter. I just never saw it that way with the 205, and I certainly don't with the R8. The V8 is fast and agile. The V10 will lay-down 200 yards of rubber in third gear. It's an animal.
The V10 is the most underrated car of its type, but it simply has to be fitted with the manual gearbox, because then it is the most complete driving experience imaginable. Yes the extra weight out back makes it a little keener to rotate and the increased spring rate takes a little comfort away, but the R8 always had some ride comfort to spare. But the key is that manual gearbox - what other car offers over 500hp, perfect weight distribution and the chance to shift yourself? And it's one of the great shifts too, much sweeter than a Gallardo's.
Turners Auctions to put muscle cars under the hammer | V8 - drag ...
Thanksgiving will come early this year for American auto enthusiasts as Turners Auctions holds an American Muscle Car Auction in Whangarei next Saturday the 20th November.
By definition a muscle car is: A product of the American car industry adhering to the hot rodder’s philosophy of taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it and Turners has 29 of the finest examples up for grabs.
The cars going under the hammer are part of a deceased estate and 10 per cent of the auction proceeds will go to the local
hospice North Haven Hospice Society INC where the owner was cared for before he passed away.
The vehicles being auctioned include a 1986 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue Edition, 1975 AMC Matador, 1975 Cadillac EI Dorado Convertible and a number of Pontiac Trans Ams.
“This is a formidable collection of classic American automobiles including a number of sought after models that rarely come up for sale. Anyone with a true appreciation for American automotive history should find something here to their liking,” says Graham Roberts, Chief Executive of Turners Auctions.
Fans of the American television series Dukes of Hazzard will be able to relive the glory days with two AMC Matadors, similar to the Hazzard County police cars used in the series, going under the hammer. Those who fancy themselves as a bit of a Boss Hog, the corrupt County Commissioner, should also check out the four Cadillac De Ville vehicles for sale.
Rounding out the collection are two slightly more refined vehicles, a 1974 Jaguar XJ6E and a 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
The auction will commence at 1pm on Saturday 20th November at Turners Whangarei, located at 13 Dyer Street. The auction will also be broadcast via Turners Live, a real time web auction facility allowing bidders from around New Zealand and the rest of the world to participate in the action, bidding against other floor and online bidders.

The Dick Johnson team driver wrapped up the title with a 14th place finish in the second race largely determined by fuel strategy—and despite stripping a wheel nut during a pit stop and dropping back to near last—when the only man who could beat him to the Championship, Triple 888’s Jamie Whincup, was leading the race. Whincup, who started the day 113 points behind Courtney, finished fifth and will be left to rue a costly failure and a non-finish in Saturday’s race after chaos and mayhem led to one of the most amazing races in V8 Supercar history—a crash derby where all three Championship leaders, Courtney, Mark Winterbottom and Whincup, fell foul of a torrential downpour across the 3.4km street circuit, which left them skating on the slippery street circuit at 260km per hour on the 60th lap. Everything changed when rain lashed the street circuit and all three drivers found themselves piled into the wall at turn five. “I’m relieved, I can’t thank my team enough for the job they have done. I didn’t think the year was ever going to end, it just kept going and going with dramas and twists and turns. I’m just unbelievably relieved that it’s over actually. We’ve got a tight bunch of guys, we all kept our heads down and in the end we did it. It’s great that a family team can still topple the giants.” Said Courtney. Holden driver Lee Holdsworth was a deserved winner of the final race of the year—his first since 2007—from the Ford of Kiwi youngster Shane Van Gisbergen who run out of fuel with the finish line in sight while leading. He managed to roll across the finish line, stopping dead on the main straight just 50 metres later. FPR’s Steve Richards in his last drive for the team took the minor rung on the podium.
