How do remove the oil pip cap from my Ariens Snow Thrower?
Nov 17, 2008 by meblake78 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The cap of the pipe that extends the oil drain in my Ariens Snow Thrower is stuck. I cannot remove it at all. Every time I put some force on it the pipe itself unscrews. Please help!
So go ahead and remove the pipe then you can put it in a vise and get the cap off like you want to.
If you are changing the oil just be sure the drain pan is under it so it catches the old oil.
Then reinstal it all

hold the pipe with a small pipe wrench, and turn the cap off with another

ariens snow thrower engine swap?
Jan 06, 2009 by zoso63 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have an old Ariens "Sno Thro" (10965) snow thrower. It has a Techumseh 5hp Engine on it (H5065077H). I just recieved an 8hp Techumseh engine and want to replace the 5hp. The output shaft is the same height and it will fit on the machine. My question is if the transfer case, augers, and impeller are the same on the 5hp and 8hp models. Will my attacthment be able to handle the added torque?
It will work just fine all you might have to do is check the output shaft size. It probably will be bigger than the 5h.p. in that case all you need to do is get a pulley to fit the 8 h.p. output shaft just make sure you keep the same size pulley as original. Then you won't have to change belts.

Ariens 745 Snow Thrower - Can't screw in Oil drain plug back in!?
Feb 16, 2007 by meblake78 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have an Ariens 745 SnowThrower. I unscrewed the oil drain plug located on the left side of the machine (from standing behind the handle) but it came off very hard. I drained the oil and then went to screw the plug back into the hole and it wouldn't screw back in! It would screw in to a point then the plug would go in at an angle. If I went any further it would just pop out of the hole? How do I get the plug to screw back into the hole? Is there any way of plugging it without using the oil drain plug?
Thanks!
You could take plug to hardware store &/or loan a proper sized tap to re-thread the stripped threads. Some auto parts stores sell rubber drain plug stoppers for autos, perhaps there may be one of the proper size there.

measure the OD of thread(If you dont know size) and get tap at hardware store same and make new thread. It is cheap and easy.Just dont get chips in oil . If it doesnt work get a helicoil kit, read instructions and go from there

Which snow thrower would you recommend? The Toro 828XLE or the Ariens with the same engine?
Aug 22, 2008 by Dana H | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
The Toro has more plastic but is very well balanced and easier to handle. The Ariens is total steel construction. The Ariens is 400.00 cheaper...We have about a 100 ft long driveway and live in southern Wisconsin...
They are both good. Make your charge by what you can afford.

I had an Ariens thrower and it failed after 2 seasons. The tires in it are also too small in the snow. I would not buy that one again.

Which 2-Stage Snow Thrower – Troy-Bilt, Toro, Ariens or Simplicity?
Nov 24, 2007 by New_Jersey_Boy | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I’m in my first single family home and I need to purchase a snow thrower. My driveway is paved asphalt, 180’ feet long and one-car wide up until the 3-car garage. I live in central New Jersey and we get 25-30” of snow a year. I’ve decided that I want at least 26” but I like 28”. I prefer to purchase from a local shop rather than a Lowe’s, HD or Sears.
Is the $899 on a Troy-Bilt Storm 9528 a good choice? At $899 it is certainly the price I want to pay but I am skeptical that I will get what I pay for. Even though they are more than I had wanted to spend, I’m considering the $1099 Toro 826LE, the $1199 Ariens ST1027LE, the $1249 Simplicity L9528E. If convinced that it is really worth it, I may also consider the $1399 Toro 828LXE.
Am I really just comparing great machines that will all do a wonderful job or are there really some noticeable differences between them in terms of quality and features? Am I really going to notice the difference between the 26”, 27” and 28” path width?
Thank
As a former small engine mechanic I would suggest Ariens Toro or Simplicity, with Ariens being my personal favorite. Troy-bilt is made by MTD and not the same quality as the rest.
Also I would consider a used machine, they really do not get much use as compared to a lawn mower. (my last Ariens was 30 years old)
I have found craigslist being a good source in my area for used machines. most prices are half of new for machines that are 3-5 years old.
If you only want new then i would avoid the big box stores like the plague, you are much better off with a local dealer.
As for the width you'll never really see a big difference unless you go with a 32" machine
