Residential zero-appear-radius riding mower shipments in the U.S. totaled 198,769 units for 2009, 12.3% below 2008. After two down years, however, redemption is expected in 2010 with a 6.0% further in shipments. Residential riding greensward mowers, a new category for the OPEI, combines products that at one time were labeled front engine turf tractors and riding garden tractors. Shipments of this by-product fell 13.7% in 2009, but are expected to recoil slightly during 2010, rising 2.0% above 2009. Annals year 2011 shipments will heighten a modest 2.5% over 2010 levels, with mount up to 2011 shipments for residential riders expected to be practically 1.107 million units.
According to the latest figures from the Inhabitant Gardening Assn. , in 2009, 72% (83 million households) participated in turf and garden activities, up from 81 million households in 2008. Turf and garden retail sales totaled $36.060 billion in 2008, but dropped 16% to $31 billion in 2009. “Foreordained the recession, the one thing that went up in 2009 was vegetable gardening, and that was up 20%,” commented Bruce Butterfield, NGA’s experimentation director. “We’ve seen that inclination before in hard times.”

Toro snow blower - can't get it off of high rev?
Feb 07, 2007 by SusieDarling | Posted in Garden & Landscape
I bought a used Toro 10 HP snow blower electric start. It had been stored in my outside shed for about a year. Went to start it up and it runs in high rev and won't come down to a normal speed. Any suggestions as to what may be wrong (choke seems to be okay) and how to fix.
It sounds as though the speed lever is on high, or else the choke is stuck. Either will force the motor to rev in the high position. Try spraying some engine cleaner into the air intake (may have to remove the filter to access the intake valve)

Can i hook up an electric snow shovel to a car battery?
Feb 14, 2007 by Luke | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The power shovel is like a weedwhacker size, and is annoying dragging around a cord. any way i could hook up the cord from it to a battery source i could mount on the snow shovel linked below?
The amount of power to run a snow shovel is going to be too much for a typical battery. Normal batteries won't last but only a few minutes. Starting your car and using the car battery is an option, but you will need a DC to AC inverter which would be expensive for the wattage of a typical snow blower. That option requires a cord as well and would defeat the purpose. There won't be a small enough battery available to mount on the snow shovel to do the work that you need. Sorry, I think you'll have to live with the cord.

yes you need an inverter to turn the DC into AC You need a big one and it will cost you more than a few dollars. Check the wattage ratings on both the shovel and inverter. In addition theis will put quite a bit on electrical "load" on the battery. You'll probably need to keep the car idled

NO

It's possible yes. BUT, between the weight you would be adding to the unit, with the battery and the inverter, as well as the cost...you will be better off dealing with the cord.

Jan 25, 2008 by Tod G | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
What's a good electric snow blower and where can I find reviews ?
Toro of course. They make the most popular snow blowers and my friend's got the electric. It totally light weight and kicks butt. He has the Toro 1800. Here's some pretty good reviews and info:

Toro 3521 snow blower - not starting?
Dec 10, 2008 by Voldo40 | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I was able to start it yesterday and it ran for about 5 min then it turned off by itself. I got it going again for 1 min then it shut itself off.
Now, I try to pull start it and the pull start doesn't even pull. When I use the electric start it attempts to start it but the engine doesn't even kick at all. It just makes this annoying noise like the electric starter is working but the engine isn't popping at all. I tested the spark plug and it does work. I'm wondering if the engine is shot and is it worth even bringing it in to a repair place if they are just going to tell me that it's a dead engine?
I'm worthless with engines and any help would greatly be appreciated!
Thanks
Steve
Hey Renpen you asked "I am having a bit of a problem figuring out what you are saying. First you said the pull start doesn't work. Does this mean you can't turn the engine over with the pull starter?" --- Yes, I can't even pull the cord an inch. Seems like something is locked.
Does the engine turn ? - Not when I try to start it through electric or when I pull it, but the pull start doesn't even budge when I try to pull it. Pull start worked just fine before it shut itself off.
Oil lvl - I didn't even check it, but now it seems as though that could be the culprit! I'll check it when I get back tonight!
I am having a bit of a problem figuring out what you are saying. First you said the pull start doesn't work. Does this mean you can't turn the engine over with the pull starter? Than you said when you use the electric starter it makes an annoying noise. My question is, does the engine turn? The pull starter could be bad or in need of work. The most common problem with small engines is the carburetor. The engine quiting is one of the most common symptoms. Most likely the carburetor needs to be remove, properly cleaned and put together with a rebuild kit. How is the oil level in the crankcase?
